Burka – The Debatable Islamic Clothing Topic

Burka is used by Islamic females as modest clothing. Though, unlike Bindi and Dreadlocks, criticism has been raised against a burqa, not only by the religious critics but also the intellectuals. It is felt by critics that women are being completely unrecognised from society because of burkas. This form of modest clothing does not promote secularism and liberation. Imagining a non-muslim girl wearing a burka or running off to shop it is almost impossible.

If it has to be discussed, here are some points which might have been overlooked by people, especially women. The commencement of wearing burka began due to the gender-oriented western culture dressing styles. In the 1940s, some females claimed burkas to be liberating. With the onset of silver screening and also advancement of media technology, it was believed that women even though women were not invulnerable, yet they were to be conserved from the fierceness of ‘sex sells’ mentality. Rita Hayworth and Elvis were the revolutionists at that time. Many young girls had started putting on makeup and wearing dresses which made their parents worry about them because of the men in public. They worried that the lusty men on roads may do harm to them. Though, we surely have come a long way. It can be proven by looking at the clothing of the models these days and comparing them with those of the past. Both desire and acceptance of society are needed in order to introduce a change. Women have been treated unequally and been oppressed by the world. Thus, female empowerment movements were started. Many people believe that if they support modest dresses, they are being anti-female. In some way, it’s not true. Also, arguments for modest clothing should not be related to the equality levels of women in society. The former is not affected by males but the latter is a male interest issue as equality of men and women is discussed in it. While discussing this issue, the comparisons made between secularism and religious reasons become a blur. Arguments have rising among not just men and women but also the beautiful yet not intelligent women and the not so beautiful yet intellectual ones.

The choice for modest clothing by women depends a lot upon their life partners. Sometimes, media gets the blame of over-hyping the issues. If the choice of wearing burqa and hijab were dependant on females, it would have been much easier. It is sometimes considered that beautiful women wouldn’t like to wear a burka at all. Unlike popular opinion, they might sometimes support modest clothing. The argument for burka includes the point that the number of cheating cases by men would definitely decrease if burqas were worn by every woman to cover their faces and hijabs to cover their bodies. The situation would be much better if it was women’s choice to wear a burqa or not, as no compulsion is mentioned in the Quran regarding burkas.
